Congratulations to
Bill and Lee Ann Bolinger, winners of
MoBA's PRODUCER OF THE YEAR
award for 2010!

SUMMER MEETING COMING UP REALLY FAST!!
Its right around the corner, in fact. Susan and Peter Kohl
are looking forward to welcoming not only MoBA members, but also
the Kansas and Oklahoma bison assn members. The event will start on Saturday
evening with a get together at the ranch for beverages and horderves at 6pm.
Its a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones
while sharing experiences and news.

On Sunday morning, the program will kick off at
9am with a couple of really interesting presentations. Ken Klemn
from Homestead Ranch over in Goodland, KS will speak on pasture management.
Gerald Parsons will cover bison health issues and also talk about the importance of the bison registry. We'll also be welcoming John Flocchini of Durham Ranch in Gelette, WY, the president of the National Bison Assn. Jim Matthesin from the NBA will also be there to give
a quick NBA overview with some info on RMA and their Pasture Rangeland Forage
index, the RMA product that applies to bison producers the most. RMA stands
for USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA). RMA and the NBA will be
sponsoring our summer meeting this year.

We'll be breaking for a bison lunch, of course.
Our agenda will look something like:

9:00 -
MoBA Welcome/Introductions

9:15 - 10:30 -

The sale results above are the best info we could find after
the sale and may not be totally accurate. MoBA currently lacks a secretary/
treasurer. We have depended on Carol Morris for so long (thank you sooooo much Carol), that we are at a loss without her. No one has stepped forward for that position, and we need someone badly. If you are willing to step forward, your help would be greatly appreciated. Please contact any officer listed on the front of this newsletter.

TESTING NO LONGER
REQUIRED – BUT MAY HELP
SELL YOUR ANIMALS!!

From Robert Long, Executive Director

Though it seems like spring will never get here, the 11th Annual MoBA Spring Sale is almost here. There's a lot of interest in consigning this year. Our spring sale has grown to be our most popular sale due to the favorable weather and the availability of the internet as a selling tool. The Producer of the Year award also seems to attract a large number of quality animals.

Last year we tried something new to help minimize the stress on the animals. We no longer required the animals to be run through the squeeze chute twice for the TB test. This was a welcomed change for the sellers, and didn’t seem to hurt the selling price any. In an effort to continue to minimize the animal stress, we are also dropping the brucellosis (Bangs) test this year. After talking with Dr. Taylor Woods, the State Veterinarian, he said we could treat our bison just like cattle going to auction. So if your animals are from Missouri or surrounding states, no testing is required. If you live outside Missouri and you want to buy animals, check with your State Vet to be sure you can bring animals back to your state. I have recently confirmed that Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska will allow bison back, and all of the rest of Missouri border states were confirmed last fall, but it doesn’t hurt to check.

Since you don’t have to test, we will allow you to bring your animals with no tags also. The calves that aren’t tagged will be sold as groups, not individually. You need to try to have them sorted by sex in your trailer when you bring them to the sale. The sale barn will not sex your animals for you. Large animals will be sold in groups of three or four. Animals that aren’t tagged with assigned numbers won’t be in the catalog, so they won’t be eligible for the show. You must meet the consignment deadline to be judged for the show.

Though we have relaxed the requirements for the sale, you can still test your animals. I think that if you are bringing animals to go into someone’s breeding program, you will want to test so that your animals will be able to go to more states, therefore command a higher price.

If you plan to bring non-cataloged animals to the sale, please let me know. The buyers will be calling to find out the types and numbers of animals coming. If you want to have your animals tested and tagged, the sale barn vet will do it for you. The charges are:

Cows and Bulls $10 for tagging, brucellosis, and aging.

Pregnancy Check $5 Fertility Check Bulls $35

TB Test $5 For TB test - All animals must be at the sale barn by 9am March 17th. There will also be the normal feed charge on animals brought in early. You will need to call Lee’s Summit Animal Hospital to make arrangements to get your animals worked. 816-524-0464 For questions or consignments call me at 417-537-8560. That will also be the fax number for the consignment sheet. During the evening you can reach me on my cell phone at 417-537-8560.

The internet action site has changed. It is now lmaauctions.com. Be sure to check them out.

Congratulations to
Gerald Parsons, winners of
